Paati Vaithiyam For Pengal Mathavidai Problem (Mathavidai Tips) | Home Remedy For Menstural Pain
In our village here in Tamil Nadu, whenever we suffer from periods pain or delayed periods, we are always treated with this remedy using asafoetida and buttermilk. Periods is called "mathavidai" in Tamil and this is truly a true granny's therapy as it is a remedy that has been practiced for many years in our place. Nowadays many women take pain relievers to get rid of the intense pain and discomfort they experience when they get their periods. Most times regular intake of pain relievers month after month will do us a lot of harm. It is best to follow the remedies that our grandmas and great grandmas practiced to get rid of periods pain. The remedies they used were very safe and practically had no side effects at all, this is one such remedy using an wonderful natural gum called asafoetida. Asafoetida is a dried gum obtained from a perennial herb that has a strong pungent smell, it is also called as hing. We use asafoetida everyday extensively in our cooking, especially it is an important ingredient in our famous South Indian rasam. It is available either in powder form or in small slabs. I always buy it in slabs, break it into small pieces, shade dry it till crisp and then store in an airtight box. I believe that asafoetida which comes in slab has better flavor and smell than the one that comes in powder form. We always use asafoetida as a home remedy as it is always there in our pantry. Asafoetida is really a boon for women as it helps treat most of the menstrual probelms that women face commonly. Asafoetida has anti spasmodic and analgesic properties which greatly helps with relieving painful spasms we experience during our periods. Asafoetida is also an emmenagogue meaning it stimulates menstrual flow, if you are having problems with delayed periods this remedy will help greatly. For the remedy, asafoetida is fried in a empty kadai and powdered and added to the buttermilk along with little bit of sugar and given to women with menstrual pain and it really helps. Asafoetida contains special chemicals called coumarins which also helps thin the blood thus making the blood flow smooth. This remedy has been used for ages in our village side and can greatly reduce the discomfort. The only con about this remedy is that the smell of asafoetida is very strong and it lingers in the mouth for quiet some time. But I think we can overlook that as it really helps one with menstrual pain. ...........
1. Take a small piece of asafoetida in a small pan and dry roast it in a small iron kadai till it changes color.
2. Let cool and powder it finely in a mortar and pestle.
3. Take a glass of buttermilk and add 1/2 tsp of sugar (to make it easier to drink) and 1/3 tsp asafoetida powder and mix well. Drink it immediately.
Fry the asafoetida till crisp or you will not be able to powder it finely
The buttermilk should not be sour.
Usually within 15 to 20 minutes the periods pain starts subsiding.
Don't add too much of asafoetida else you won't be able to drink it.
