How to Make Bhringraj | Karisalankanni Hair Oil Recipe For Hair Growth

This homemade bhringraj oil | karisalankanni hair oil is very famous in my place and does wonders for hair. We always used to have bhringraj plants in the farm but since there was no proper rains this year, all the plants died. When Aparna, who is a regular reader of this blog, asked me to post about bhringraj, I was looking out for this plant everywhere. Yesterday, when I went to visit my maternal grandmother, I saw bhringraj plants in the farm there, I collected them and made the oil yesterday. There are two varieties of bhringraj plants, one with white flowers and the other with yellow flowers. Both can be used to make this oil, I made the oil with white flowers. This bhringraj oil has amazing hair benefits. It prevents hair fall, premature greying, strengthens the hair roots, conditions the hair well, prevents split ends, stimulates hair growth - in short everything that is needed for a healthy hair. Nowadays bhringraj oil is marketed everywhere, but you can make your own pure bhringraj oil at home very easily. I prefer to use homemade coconut oil that is not refined for making this oil and I would strongly suggest that you do the same for best results. You can identify this plant easily with it's flowers and it is also used extensively in home remedies. This oil can be made in two ways, the first method is made by grinding the bhringraj leaves without water and making it into small rounds and then sun drying it till crisp. Then the rounds are added to coconut oil in a glass jar and placed in hot sunlight till the color of the oil changes. This method takes around 3 to 4 days for the rounds to dry and for the coconut oil to get heated up. This method is best done during hot summer months. I did the second method, which is made by directly heating the paste in coconut oil. This oil has a beautiful green color and a unique pleasant smell. When I made this oil, the whole house was smelling of this oil. To use this oil, massage it well into the scalp before having your hair wash regularly and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. This oil stores well for up to 3 months at room temperature.

 METHOD:
1. These are bhringraj leaves, you can identify them with the yellow and white colored flowers.

2. Separate the leaves and immerse it in water, the sand and dust will settle down. Repeat the process to get rid of the dirt completely and pat dry using a clean kitchen towel to absorb excess moisture.

3. Grind the leaves in a mixer to a coarse paste without adding any water.

4. Heat virgin coconut oil in a low flame along with the paste. It will start sizzling immediately.

5. Heat the mixture in a low flame till the sizzling sound stops completely and switch off.

6. Let the oil cool, strain and store it in a glass bottle.

NOTES:
  • Wait for the sizzling sound to stop completely before switching off.
  • Use fresh leaves for best results.
  • Make sure not to burn the bhringraj leaves.
  • Store it only in glass bottles.
  • Try this oil using direct sunlight method, during hot summer months.

    1. Hi virgin coconut oil is the oil that is not refined. It is made by sun drying the coconuts and pressing it to extract the oils, no chemical additives are added to it.

    1. Regular massage with any homemade oils prepared with pure ingredients will strengthen the hair roots and will prevent hair fall. The main thing is to use it regularly. This oil will prevent hair fall and help in regrowth, if coupled with a good diet.....

  6. Hai Mam, Is it possible to use Fermentation Processed virgin Coconut Oil(Homemade) in this process?
    Any oil for Baldness?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, fermentation processed coconut oil will be fine for this process. Regular oil bath, homemade hair oils and hair packs greatly prevents balding if combined with a good diet. But I haven't come across an effective home remedy or oil that helps to regrow hair on bald head. Though I have heard of small onion juice for hair regrowth on bald scalp, I doubt it's effectiveness in regrowing hair especially for a person who is genetically disposed to baldness...

you will find these plants near places where water is abundantly available, like near Ponds, Talabs, open drainage gutter surroundings and along the paddy cultivated areas. If you are from Hyderabad I can give (9704725526)you powder of these leaves both in small and big quantities. The above said remedy is really good. We have used it at home and had good results for me and my family members. Guntagalagara plant is water type of plant and it will be available just before paddy harvesting period and will die soon. Better way of utilizing it is its powder which also works as good as green leaves.

    Respected madam,
I appreciate your immense interest and involvement in developing the blog for people. I could learn many more new things from your blog. I appreciate the way you are contributing and the way you are conglomerating useful things at one site.
I saw many posts in your blog where people are asking for Bhringaraj leaves/powder. Seeing so many requests, I feel I should say that I have a great resource of Bhringaraj with me. I stay in the outskirts of Hyderabad. If some body needs Bhringaraj powder, you can guide them to have it from me. If they are near Hyderabad, let them come and take from me and if they are from distant place, let them do their own arrangement to collect it from me. Thank you madam. One of my friend used this bhringaraj and had very soft and black hair. Now all of their family is using the same oil every day seeing the benefit. One of my friend with bald head resident of Banglore, took bhringaraj from me and used it and now he is happy that he got new roots of hairs. He has thanked me for hundreds of times till now.
One of friends who collects various roots and medicinal plants from Nallamala forest will also extent his help in giving any type of ayurvedic medicinal roots and parts of plants and ingredients for people. You can contact me at 9704725526. Thank you madam.

    1. Hi Selvi, You can use either the white or yellow variety bhringraj for making the oil. To make the bhringraj oil with the powder, heat the coconut oil and the bhringraj powder mixed together in a very low flame till a nice aroma wafts and then switch off. Powders burn easily, so try making it in a very low flame. I have always made the oil only with the fresh extract and I am not sure how effective the oil made with the powder will be...

After using this oil, for hair wash whether we have to use shampoo r natural powder(shikakkai)?which will give the best result??

    1. If you can use natural methods of washing hair like arappu powder or shikakai powder, it will be good. But if you are not comfortable using them try using a good quality baby shampoo, especially if you are suffering from lot of hair fall as it is more strictly monitored for pH balance than normal shampoo's..
