8 Top Benefits, Uses & Side Effects Of Triphala Churna For Hair, Skin, Eyes & Weight Loss

Triphala is one of the most famous ayurvedic formulations that is popularly used all over the world. As the word triphala suggests, it is made of three famous ayurvedic ingredients, haritaki, bibhitaki and amalaki. The botanical name of haritaki is Terminalia Chebula (elongated fruits in the bottom picture), bibhtaki (the round big ones in the bottom picture) is Terminalia Bellirica and amla (the smaller darker ones) is Emblica officinalis. It will be a great loss if we don't know about the wonderful uses and benefits of triphala as it is an amazing medicine that has wide medicinal uses. According to ayurvedha, our body is made up of three doshas, triphala balances all the three doshas. Haritaki balances vata, amla balances pitta and bibhitaki balances kapha. It is one of the best ayurvedic formulations that detoxify and rejuvenate our body at the same time. Triphala powder is called triphala churna in Hindi, Triphala podi in Tamil & Telugu. Triphala is best known for it's use in assisting weight loss, treat skin and hair problems, dental problems, digestion related problems, constipation, eye problems and improve our immunity. Triphala can be either taken as a powder in the form of triphala churna or you can also use equal amounts of the whole herbs. I always stock dried amla, haritaki and bibhitaki at home as I prefer to use the whole dried fruits for some remedies, for instance I love the mouth rinse made with the whole dried fruits for treating dental problems. You can buy very good quality organic triphala churna in the markets and I would suggest using both the whole dried fruits and the triphala churna depending on the remedy it is used for. Along with the uses mentioned below, triphala also has positive impact on lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Triphala Dosage: Usually 1/4 to 1/2  tsp of triphala churna or if using tablets, 1 tablet is recommended per day. But I would sugget consulting an ayurvedic physician for the correct dosage. How to take triphala: It is usually taken along with warm water. Triphala side effects: Pregnant women should avoid taking triphala. The main reason for some adverse effects while taking triphala churna internally is mainly because of overdosing. Overdosing can lead to diarrhea, flatulence, might lower blood sugar levels drastically and upset stomach. I would suggest slowly increasing the dosage that way it will be very easy for our body to adjust without any adverse side effects....

One of the use of triphala that made me very happy was it's use in greatly preventing precancerous lesions. Triphala has been proven to greatly prevent the precancerous lesions and also reverse it!  This use alone can save so many lives as many have tobacco chewing habit. 2. Thank you Ramya ! Wonderful post. I had heard about Triphala earlier but refrained from using it because it also acts like a churna, and chances are your body gets used to it. Is this true ? Would it mean we shouldn't take it regularly ?
Appreciate all your posts & information.

    1. Using any herb for long duration's is said to lose it's efficiency like you mentioned and that is why Ayurveda recommends taking the herbs with different ingredients depending on the seasons. I would always suggest consulting an ayurvedic physician if taking any herb for long duration's as they will guide one better with the dosage depending on one's body type...

  5. Hi Ramya madam,

I am 29 and am suffering hair loss big time. I am from Chennai city, I saw your blog and have ordered 3 powders online - Triphala, Bringaraj, Ashwagantha. I saw the dosage details from each of the pages. My question is can you tell me whether I can take all of them together at the same time in early morning? Can taking them all cause any side effect or problem?

My wife and I are of same height (5.7 feet). Though at first we didn't care much, seems like some of my wife's friends and relatives have made stupid comments about the issue, and now she is deeply hurt. You said Ashwagantha can help but it has no proof to support the same. Is there any medicine or exercise for the same?

I suffer from bloating almost on a daily basis...can triphala cure bloating? What dosage should I take? Once I saw in Ramdevs show, he suggested to boil the 3 ingredients and then drink it but drinking after boiling makes me so nauseous that I vomit out as soon as I drink it. What's the correct way of taking triphala?
