Aloe Vera For Dandruff: 5 Top Ways

Aloe Vera Oil

We use aloevera extensively for hair care especially for treating dandruff. Aloe vera has wonderful antimicrobial properties which makes it very effective for treating dandruff. We can apply the fresh gel on our scalp as it is or we can use it in the form of aloe vera hair pack or aloe vera hair oil too, all are very very effective in treating dandruff.

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a very common skin condition that causes scalp itching and flakiness. Dandruff can be caused due to many reasons from fungal infection, not washing hair often, dry scalp, stress and even certain hair products can cause dandruff. Though dandruff is not a very serious condition, chronic dandruff can lead to scratching which can cause scalp inflammation leading to hair fall.

We get many anti dandruff shampoos in the markets but they all come with certain side effects like irritation, dry scalp and even sometimes temporary hair loss. If you are looking for a natural alternative for treating dandruff, consider fresh aloe vera gel, it does not have any side effects and greatly helps treat dandruff.

Aloe vera has been proven to have anti inflammatory, antioxidant and moisturizing properties. When we apply fresh aloe vera gel, it helps soothe the irritation and greatly helps reduce itching. Since it has moisturizing properties, it helps treat dandruff caused due to extreme dryness of the scalp.

Dandruff can also be caused due to fungal infection and because of its anti fungal properties, it can treat fungal dandruff too. If we don’t wash our hair often, that can accumulate in the scalp leading to dandruff and itchiness. Aloe vera has cleansing properties and it helps clean the dirt and grime from the scalp very effectively.

5 Top Ways To Use Aloe Vera For Treating Dandruff:

1. Aloe Vera & Lemon Hair Pack:

Aloe Vera and Lemon Hair Pack

Take a tbsp of ground fresh aloe vera gel in a cup. Add in the juice of half a lemon and apply it as hair mask using a piece of cotton. Wait for 15 minutes before washing it off with a mild shampoo. This hair pack treats dandruff really well.

2. Aloe Vera & Neem Hair Pack:

Take a tbsp of neem powder in a bowl along with a tbsp of coconut oil. Add in enough aloe vera juice to form a paste and use it as a hair mask. To use, apply the paste using a hair brush all over the scalp. Wait for 20 minutes before washing it off with a mild shampoo. This hair pack will treat all scalp infections including dandruff.

3. Fresh Aloe Vera Gel:

Cut a fresh aloe vera leaf from the plant. When you cut the leaf from the plant, you will find slimy green juice on the surface of the leaf. Wash away the juice completely under running water, cut the thorns from the sides of the leaf and cut in half. Scoop out the gel, grind in a mixer to get smooth gel and apply on the scalp. Wait for an hour and wash it off.

4. Aloe Vera & Onion Hair Pack:

Take 1/4 cup of peeled shallots also called small onions in India and chinna vengayam in Tamil. Grind in a mixer without adding any water and extract the juice. To the juice, add equal quantities of fresh aloe vera juice. Apply all over the scalp, wait for 15 minutes before washing it off. This treats both scalp itching and dandruff.

5. Aloe Vera Hair Oil:

Aloe vera oil with vitamin E

Aloe vera hair oil made by infusing aloe vera gel in coconut oil is also very effective against treating dandruff. The oil is so easy to make but it takes some time as we should do it using double boiler method. Using double boiler helps prevent nutrient loss and I always prefer it over direct heat method. You can find how to make aloe vera oil here.

Hi, There is an other method where henna powder is soaked with tea decoction in an iron kadai overnight and applied on the hair( I will post it soon). It gives even darker color, but to get complete black color is impossible with henna.

Hi there, I didn't see this until now. It really depends on your original hair color. There are some great threads about it on the Long Hair Forum (just google that). Personally, if I am looking to do black on medium brown hair I use this recipes: http://www.mehndiskinart.com/indigo_hair_recipe.htm . I use a variation of hers on my mom. However, my henna recipe – which is super strong is the following: 3 cups henna1 lemon (squeezed)3/4 cup apple cider vinegar 2 raw eggs 2 tablespoons of olive oil1 table spoon of argan oilIt should be the consistency of toothpaste, if not – add more henna I let that sit for a couple hours, then I freeze it for 24. I leave it on my head for like 6 hours with plastic wrap. Conditions your hair while you dye it 🙂 For black, I do that – rinse it all out and then use there method on the website there. Hope that helps!

The powder and aloevera leaf should be ground just before applying or the powder mixed earlier and the leaf ground in at the time of applying?

Hi, Grind both together and then it can be applied immediately. You don't have to mix the powder into a paste before hand. We have only tried it with fresh henna leaves, but I am sure, good quality henna powder will give the same results.

Hi Ramya, I also am prematurely grey, I started going grey at 15 & have a great many now. I've used henna in the past unsuccessfully & thought maybe it just didn't adhere well to grey hair. I see now that it was not pure enough & I was not following the correct procedure. Before I try again, how is the colour density on ur cousin's greys? Does it cover completely opaque or is there still a translucence where u can see the grey?

My cousin is not completely grey. She does not have too much grey hair, her premature greying started recently.

Hi Dipanjana,My cousin has normal hair and she has been using this mixture with good results for many years now without her hair drying out, that is why I didn't mention egg. If your hair is very dry, add an egg or a tsp of olive oil, it will not reduce the dying properties of henna…..
