How to Treat Constipation in Small Babies with Raisin Water Using Paladai Feeding Cup

Some babies suffer from constipation (even breast fed babies) till they start eating solid food. We always use raisins to solve constipation problems, especially with young babies who are a few months old. The raisins are soaked in boiling water the previous night and the next day its ground and the water is given to the babies.

We feed the babies raisin water with paladai feeding cup /sangu (the one that you see in the picture). We always feed all the medicines to very small babies, with this paladai feeding cup and every home in our village side has one.

The babies are made to lie down on the lap with their head slightly elevated and then the medicine is fed to them by inserting the tip of the paladai in one corner of the babies mouth. Feeding the babies through the corner of their mouth ensures that only small amount of the medicine enters their mouth at a time.

They do cry and try to push the paladai feeding cup away. But if someone hold their hands gently, one can easily give the medicines to them. We always use sweet raisins for this. Wash the raisins very well before soaking it in water. The amount of raisins depends on the age of the baby.

How to Treat Constipation in Small Babies with Raisin Water

METHOD:

1.Take the required amount of raisins. For 3 to 4 months old babies use just 1 tbsp small raisins and for babies who are older than 7 months, use around 2 tbsp raisins. Wash the raisins thoroughly and soak it in boiling water for 3 to 4 hrs or overnight.

2.Grind the raisins along with the water in a mixer. Make sure the mixer is washed properly or just use a small jar separately for the baby.

3.Strain it using a double strainer so that all the pith is completely filtered. This is especially very important, if you are feeding 3-4 month old babies.

4.Keep the baby in your lap comfortably with the head slightly elevated and gently hold on to the hands with one hand. Keep the paladai  in one corner of the mouth and feed them little by little.

NOTES:

  • Don’t fill the paladai to the brim, it will spill all over the baby
  • Grind the raisins finely so as to extract all the juice from it.
  • Always use sweet raisins.

Ramya, thank you for this simple recipe for consipation, I will try this. It is better than taking a chemical powder form like Metamucil. I never knew something like raisin water could work to treat consipation.

For 2 month old baby, give around a 1.5 tbsp of the syrup once early in the morning. Once everyday is enough, I was giving my son once everyday for a few days, till he was passing stools freely.

Hi, If your are breast feeding her and she is healthy, I think you don't have to worry. I breast fed my son for 7 months and I didn't give him anything else except breast milk as per my grandma's instructions and he was also thinner, but healthy. If she is taking her feed properly and is healthy, please don't worry……….

Is it normal for the breastfeed babies to pass stool once in every 7-10 days??

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      January 10, 2015 / 6:42 pm

Doctors advise that it is ok for breast fed babies to pass stools infrequently, provided they don't show signs of constipation like blood in the stools, has hard stools, has difficulty passing stools, they should also take their feed and pass urine normally. But try some of these things: try this raisin water or prune for babies above a month old, check whether the milk supply is enough as insufficient supply is also one of the reasons for not passing stools this long, keep yourself hydrated and feed on one side completely before feeding on the other side, this ensures that the baby is hydrated as the first milk is watery, hope this helps……

My one month baby is suffering from constipation.. She often grunts n pain for passing motion… Lemme try this method.. But I do have one question.. You say we have to boil the water and then soak the raisins overnight.. My doubt s early morning when I try to give that water it becomes very cold… So can I reboil that water or can I jus grind and strain and give it directly.. Cos the climate here very cold and I fear she might catch one.. Plz advice

Hi Sharmila, Use warm water for grinding the soaked raisins that way the raisin water won't be very cold when you are giving it to her……..

Hi,My son is 3years and 5months.he holds his stool for 3to 4days and one day he cries for stomach pain.I am giving him soaked raisins and raisin water but its not working.please tell me something so that he starts passing daily.thank u

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      April 9, 2015 / 7:57 am

Manisha, raisin water is for babies. Since he is 3 years old, increase the fiber in his diet. My son had the same problem, when I started giving him lot of fruits, water and a diet rich in unrefined cereals, he started passing stools freely without any pain. Tweak his diet a little to include fiber rich foods and this problem will go away very soon…..

Hi Anitha, I would suggest using it as a remedy for treating constipation not as a regular juice because long term use of raisin water is said to increase cavities….

Hi ramya, my baby is 11 months old now. She is passing stool very hard. How much ml of raisin water should I give to her?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 31, 2015 / 2:37 pm

Hi Raveena, Start with 1.5 tbsp of raisins and if she still has the problem increase it to 2 tbsp. The amount of water added to the grind the raisin is optional, you can either thin it down or give a thick concentrate as per your child's preference..

Hi My three month old baby stomach is becoming reddish after feeding. It's like patches with no swelling and it goes of after couple of hours. She is healthy and passing stool almost every feed from Day 1. Is this something I should be worried about ? I checked in net and found it could be food allergy. We stay abroad and we don't get any medics from doctor for year. Can you advise grape water would help?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      December 19, 2015 / 2:01 pm

Grape water will treat only constipation and not allergies, I would suggest consulting a pediatrician about the allergy….

my wife and her mom are skeptical about using pacfiers for our 4week old baby. So they improvised and filled the pacifier with soaked raisins and punched a small hole into the pacifier. They feel this will give something nutritious to the baby while it is sucking it. Is it safe?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      January 8, 2016 / 3:36 pm

Sucking on raisins will prevent constipation in babies. The only side effect for a child sucking on raisins is the high sugar content of raisins, I would suggest limiting the amount of time the child sucks on the pacifier…
