If you have never used bath powders/ kuliyal podi/ sunni pindi before, then you might be wondering, why I am praising bath powders so much. I am so used to bath powders from very young age and trust me they smell, feel better than any store bought soaps. Many people find using powders to wash their skin very odd, but these home made bath powders clean the skin well and does not strip the skin of natural oils.
The ingredients in homemade bath powders treats existing minor skin diseases and prevents the skin from further infections. Once you start using homemade bath powders, you will never be able to stop using them. This rose petal bath powder is very fragrant and should be made in peak summer. This bath powder has green gram dal, wild turmeric, white turmeric/ poolan kilangu and dried rose petals.
Rose petals reduces wrinkles and prevents the skin from sun damage. Wild turmeric is called “kasturi manjal” in Tamil and it is very fragrant than normal turmeric. We use kasturi manjal for most of our skin preparations, as it reduces blemishes and pimples. Green gram dal is a very good natural body cleaner and it keeps our body cool. White turmeric (Zedoary) is called ” Poolan kilangu” in Tamil. It helps in healing any damage to the skin and prevents infections.
To make this powder, first collect pesticide free roses, remove the petals and sun dry them till completely dry. Take the measured out green gram dal, white turmeric/ poolan kilangu, wild turmeric in a wide plate and sun dry it for a day. We usually use the dried varieties of both the turmerics. Add the dried rose petals to the dried mixture and powder them finely in a mixer. Sieve the mixture and store it. To use, take the required amount of powder and mix it with water to make a paste. Scoop the mixture and rub it all over the body like soap and wash it off. You will find great difference in your skin texture if you use this bath powder regularly.
Indian Homemade Rose Petal Bath Powder
METHOD:
1. Collect fresh roses, remove the petals and spread it on a plate.
2. Sun dry the rose petals till they are crisp.
3. Sun dry green gram dal, white turmeric/ poolan kilangu, wild turmeric in the sun for a day.
4. Add the sun dried rose petals to it and powder it finely in a mixer.
5. Store the homemade bath powder in an airtight box.
NOTES:
- I used paneer variety roses for this bath powder.
- This bath powder can be mixed with milk during winter time, if you feel your skin is very dry.
- Sun drying the ingredients till crisp is very important, else the powder will spoil easily.
- Although white turmeric/ poolan kilangu, wild turmeric and green gram dal are in their dried form , drying them in sun makes it easy to grind it finely.

Hello,Where can I get Wild turmeric and White turmeric here in Delhi….
Hi Kirti, I am sorry I don't know where you get turmeric in Delhi. But you get good quality turmeric (both varieties) online…
Hi Ramya,Your blog is very informative and useful. Thanks. I could not find any online vendor for the ingredients you specify or atleast the turmeric. If you don't mind can you help me with the online shops selling these ?Thanks,Nila
Hi Nila, I am trying to compile all the sources for the ingredients in this blog, hopefully I will finish doing it soon :). I haven't found a good online source for kasturi turmeric still 🙁
Ramya….May be you can suggest her dhathri.com for kasturi manjal.
Hi Ramya, I was previously suggesting dhathri.com for kasturi manjal. Later today I got to know that iyarkai herbals has online delivery. I have used kasturi manual, nalungu maavu, hair wash powder from iyarkai herbals and found them to be good. Nalungu maavu helped me to cure heat boils in my hand which came due to waxing. If you wish you can suggest that website. I saw someone enquiring about arappu which is also there with iyarkai herbals. But I have to tell one point about kasturi manjal; directly applying it as a face pack gave me burning sensation for some time. This i have experienced with all brands of kasturi manjal ☺And about your blog.. You are really doing an amazingggg job….i am willingly taking the honor of promoting your blog to my family and friends. Wonderful photography too ☺
Thanks a lot Sindhu, your kind words made my day…:)
Hello, Amazing post! I was searching for ubtan and i landed here! Cool photos, cute jars and pots, cool blog! Very neatly presented! I wonder how you can make everything at home! You are inspiring many like me. All the best.I have 3 questions.1. Can i use Vellari vidhai to this bath powder?2. As it is very much polluted outside (in chennai) Is this bath powder enough to clean the skin?I stopped using soaps. I am now using plain payatham maavu mixed with rose water. But your bath powder seems really nice. I have smelt poolan kizhangu. It has a very good fragrance. I am going to purchase all the items today, as given in your above post.3.You have mentioned Arappu in one of your posts. Can we get that kind of (Green) Arappu here in chennai? As the arappu powder we get here is not that good.
U can get good quality arappu from rangasamy chettiar shop in RS puram,Coimbatore.
Shruthi, Thanks a lot! You can add Vellari Vidhai, but make sure to dry it well. This powder cleans very well, in fact it effectively prevents skin infections. Many have asked me this question about arappu powder. Shruthi, I always use the arappu leaves from our farm to make arappu powder and I don't know where we get good quality arappu. But I will be on the look out, if I find a good source I will update it in the blog….
Hi ramya I am in middle east.i won't white turmeric here.can I skip that and add almonds to this?
White turmeric available in all Al Adil Stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, All ingredients mentioned here is available
Hi, You can skip the white turmeric but if you add almonds to the powder, it will spoil very soon…..
Hi Ramyathanks a lot for sharing the information. I so believe in such natural products where in the results are genuine and long lasting unlike these chemical products. i would like you to please help us to prepare one such magical powder for face wash witch best ingredients considering the harshness that our skin goes through in our day to day routine especially working women. Looking forward for response. Have a nice day.
Hi Pankaja, I use this simple homemade powder for face wash, try it: http://wildturmeric.net/2013/09/traditional-indian-bath-powder.html
Hai Children's also used this way ah
Hi, We prepare nalangu mavu (children bath powder) differently but this powder can be used for children too. For boy babies, skip the kasthuri manjal in the bath powder…..
Hi Ramya…. amazing work here. ran into ur blog n can't stop reading..i live in Bangalore and my skin and hair has become very dry due to hard water. Whole body has turned dark oo. And recently my babies skin is also getting effected . Which of these bath powder do u think is best suited for bot of us? looking forward for your response …Thanks in advanceDiya
Hi, This rose petal bath powder will be good to get back the skin to it's original color and texture. Try using it regularly to see results. In winter months you can mix the paste with milk instead of water, if your skin is dry…..
Hi Ramya, thanks for giving such good things in an easier way.I ll get some burnings sensation while using regular turmeric, so I'm not using that for face, but for rest of the body I ll. Can I use the above bath powder? Won't it damage my skin more as it is dry skin?
Hi Priya, kasthuri manjal rarely causes allergies in people, give this bath powder a try. This powder usually does not strip the skin of natural oils but if you feel your skin is dry after using it, mix it with a tiny little amount of either milk or yogurt along with water to make a paste before using……
Hi, this post so good. I feel bad every time my house grown roses dry. Now i can use them better. Is this powder for daily bathing use? Iam from chennai and i dont know where i can get this white turmeric. will they be available in "naatu marunthu" shops? and wild turmeric is the general manjal kilangu we get during festivals rt?
Hi Priyanka,You will get white turmeric in naatu marunthu shops. Wild turmeric is not the regular round or virali manjal that we use for cooking, it is called kasthuri manjal in Tamil. It is very fragrant and used mainly for external applications…
o.. i thought white turmeric is different from kasturi manjal.. anyway i will check in the naatu marunthu shop today.. One other tip.. You can also add sun dried tulsi and mint leaves with these and grind them. Both are anti-microbial and work as good skin protectors. I use green gram, kasturi manjal, mint, tulsi for regular evening face wash or everyday face pack. they prevent acne and pimples as well..
Priyanka, you got me wrong, white turmeric or poolankilangu is different from wild turmeric or kasthuri manjal and thank you for your suggestion, I will try adding tulsi and mint the next time…:)
Hi Ramya,I stay in a cold country and noticed that when I use green gram flour for my daughter while bathing , it leaves her skin very dry. Mixing with yogurt or milk for the whole body is not very practical. Can you suggest something else that we can add along with the powder while bathing or any thing natural after bathing.
Hi, try good quality gram flour (kadalai maavu) it won't be as drying on the skin. You can also massage her skin with homemade cream or lotion immediately after bathing to retain the moisture. You can find the recipes for both the lotion and cream in the blog…
My daughter also has a very dry skin and after taking bath and drying her, first thing I do is nicely apply just a few drops of coconut oil all over her body including her face. It takes a few minutes to get absorbed. I apply lotion only after an hour or two. Applying coconut oil regularly helps in preventing dry skin and also prevents in catching cold or skin infections. She used to get skin rashes very frequently since her skin is very sensitive. But now it has reduced a lot. Hope this might be useful.
Thank You. Will definitely try both methods.
Hi Ramya ,Nice powder … Can you share the baby bath powder preparation . and can you please share the online store where we get good white turmeric. Thanks in advance ..
Dhivya,I have posted baby bath powder preparation in the blog already. I have never purchased white turmeric online but I think you can get it from amazon…
Ramya dearest…just a suggestion, please start retailing also..I will be the first to buy all your products…superb…nalla pampering for body and mind.
Dear Angel, Thanks a lot 🙂 I will try my best, if not for the finished products at least I will try all the raw materials for making them soon…
Thank you…your nalangu maavu is so detailed..nowhere online have I seen the use of so many ingredients. My son is 10 months old and has dry itchy skin, is the baby bath powder safe enough for his sensitive skin.
Angel, The nalangu maavu recipe is a very old recipe that has been followed for many years in my family. This recipe is very safe to use even on the most sensitive skin. For very very dry skin, you can also mix the powder with little bit of yogurt or milk while mixing into a paste. Also try massaging his skin with pure Aloe Vera gel everyday before his bath, it will treat his dry itchy skin very effectively….
I am planning to switch from commercial soaps. Will def. make this.
Can we use 50% green gram dhal and 50% channa dhal
Dear Ramya,I have a question regarding rose powder. Since I wanted to make above recipe I thought I would buy Khadi rose powder. Do natural rose powder stains finger dark pink when mixed with water ? Does it stain acne marks pink? I wonder whether there is adulterant in the product or it naturally stains pink. Your suggestions would be helpful.
Sandy, natural rose powder will not stain like the way you describe. If you are doubtful about the quality of store bought rose powder, why not buy dried rose petals which is readily available and powder it yourself? It will just take few minutes to grind and we will know that it is pure….
Thank you Ramya. I will do as you suggested. Can you check from this list of ingredients and tell me which ingredient may be responsible to staining red? I am curious to know whether it is any other ingredient which is causing this or some adulterant.Solum Fullonum,Rosa Damascena, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Calamine,Zyncum Oxydatum,Santalum Album, Ocimum sanctum, Bacopa monniera, Azadirachta indica ,Prunus Armeniaca,Ricinus Communis, Mimosa pudica, Asparagus racemosus,Withania somnifera,Sida Cordifolia,Rubio Cordifolia, Pogostemon Cablin.
rubia cordifolia is well known for a reddish tinge and is known better as indian madder, used to stain fabrics. It is also a powerful blood purifier and is the source of the red colour you are seeing in the powder.
Sandy, sorry for the late reply. As far as I know, in these ingredients calamine, if made with pink clay can make the whole mixture red. The combination of both Damascus and calamine might be staining it red like the way you described and also check whether the sandalwood powder is of red variety…..
Thank you Ramya. The color of dry powder is light pink and on adding water it gets little darker color. And stains fingers and only marks on face. I feel one of your suggestion can hold true. Thank you once again.
hai sister, if i use turmeric it can cause damage to my beard and mustache ?
Turmeric has to be used consistently for a long time for it to retard hair growth even for women. For men, the chances are very less as they have more coarser hair, so it will not affect the beard and mustache but it might stain the face yellow after using it…….
Shall I use this powder for my two.years old son. Without turmeric powder
Hi Anitha,You can absolutely use this bath powder for your son…..

Congratulations for your marriage! I would suggest using the bleach and oatmeal mask weekly thrice and also try massaging the face with pure honey mixed with few drops of lemon juice the rest of the days. Avoid using new cosmetics and creams now and use only pure homemade ingredients. Try to relax, get good sleep and eat well, I am sure your skin will be glowing on your marriage day….:)
🙂 thanks a lott for your reply Ramya..
Hi Ramya, I love your blog! I have recently put a link to your blog on my post about Henna (tulleandfro.blogspot.com). I have a question: I use Hesh Rose Petal Powder that has a slight purple-brown color. I've used it in my Henna dyes and wonder if it affects color? I can't find information online about Rose Petal Powder dying things, only Hibiscus Petal Powder. Do you think it could affect hair dye color for light hair? (I am now using mostly Cassia Obovata for blonde color with a bit of Henna).
I have never used store bought rose petal powder but I do dry roses and add it to bath powders and other stuff and I have never experienced any staining at all. One small suggestion, try mixing the rose petal powder with water and apply it to a very small part of your hair, then we can find out whether it stains….
Hi Ramya, your blog is very useful to me. where should I get wild turmeric and white turmeric in Hyderabad.
Hi, Try in shops that sell pooja herbs and ayurvedic medicines…

Poolankilangu won't increase hair growth, it is to stop hair growth for ladies
Hi RamyaIs Poolan kizhangu same as seemai kichili kizhangu? If they are different can they be used interchangeably?
Poolan kizhangu and kichili kizhangu are the same…
Korai Kilangu is the best one. Vasambu(Acorus) powder, Kuppaimeni leaves powder, Korai kilangu powder can be added in addition with Almonds

Hi Swathi, Sun drying the ingredients till the ingredients are really crisp before powdering is the best way to increase the shelf life. I would suggest storing airtight glass jar, try and let me know how you like it…

Hi I have white turmeric as well as kasturi mangal. One of my aunt said that white turmeric is for boys to promote hair growth, and kasturi mangal is for female. Is it true? Can female use white turmeric?
Yes, you can use white turmeric. We have always added little bit of white turmeric to bath powders always…
Does long usage of any kind of turmeric to face gives matured skin ?
Dear Archana, In my personal experience, turmeric causes skin dryness and for some people it increases skin sensitivity to sun but it never causes skin aging. Here in our village women have been using turmeric after bath daily and they have amazing skin…. 🙂
Hi Remya. Your blog is interesting. Found it by chance. Excellent reference material here.
I am glad you find the blog useful…
Akka, can we use regular tumeric instead of the white & wild variety ? I am a 35 year old guy & not interested in the fragrance aspects of the recipe.

We never use pippali in bath powders as even if a tiny bit enters our eyes, it will cause intense irritation….

Hi…using white tumeric affect hair growth of my son?
Though it is not proven through research, turmeric (all varieties) used for long duration's of time as a body wash powder does stunt body hair growth that is why we never use turmeric in bath powder for boys…
