Like many I love lemon water made by mixing lemon juice, honey and warm water. It is also one of the most popular remedies for weight loss and to detox the body naturally. After years of using natural remedies, I have learnt one important lesson and that is to get to know the side effects before using any natural remedy on a regular basis. It applies to lemon water too.
Can Lemon Water Be Bad For You?
Lemon water has wonderful medicinal uses and you can read about all of it’s health benefits here. But we should get to know how to use it correctly to prevent any side effects especially if you decide to have it on a regular basis.
But lemon is also highly acidic which is why it will not agree for everyone. In my personal experience, if we have lemon water in between meals most people can tolerate it well.
But if consumed in empty stomach in the morning, it might cause problems especially in people who are prone to gastric problems like ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.
Side Effects Of Hot Lemon Water Detox:
Few years back, I started consuming lemon mixed with hot water regularly. I was having it in between meals and I felt great. I never had any digestive problems, always felt fresh and never got a cold too.
It was all going great till one of my friends advised me to take lemon water in empty stomach as a natural detox drink. Once I started consuming lemon water in empty stomach, I started getting slight stomach burn and a gnawing feeling in my stomach.
I stopped consuming lemon water and took manathakali soup for a few days to get rid of the burning sensation. If you are prone to stomach ulcers, never consume acidic foods in empty stomach, have it in between meals.
5 Side Effects Of Drinking Lemon Water With Honey In The Morning:
1. Lemon Water Might Cause Tooth Decay:
One of the major side effects of consuming highly acidic foods like lemon is it can erode our teeth enamel. When we consume lemon water on a daily basis, our teeth comes into contact with the acidic lemon juice which erodes our tooth enamel leading to teeth sensitivity.
To prevent this from happening, drink it through a straw. This will reduce the amount of time our teeth is in contact with lemon water. You can also rinse your mouth after drinking lemon water to protect the teeth further.
2. Lemon Water Worsens Canker Sores:
If you are having canker sores, I would suggest not consuming lemon water for a few days as it can cause intense irritation. Canker sore is an open and painful mouth ulcer that is very common. They are white or yellow in color surrounded by inflamed red tissue.
Canker sores are usually found inside the lips and cheeks and can make eating extremely painful. Foods containing citric acid like lemon water can cause severe irritation if you drink it while you have canker sores.
3. Worsens Gastric Ulcers & IBS Symptoms:
If you are suffering from gastric ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, I would strongly suggest not taking lemon water in empty stomach. Ulcers are formed when our stomach produces excessive acidic juice causing the soft inner lining of our stomach to erode.
Having acidic foods will worsen the condition even more. I never take lemon water in empty stomach as some times it irritates my stomach. Take it in between meals to prevent the side effects and don’t take more than one cup a day.
4. Lemon Water is A Diuretic:
Lemon water is a mild diuretic, it increases the urine output slightly more. It is because of this diuretic nature that lemon water is always included in detox diets. When we drink lemon water on a regular basis we should remember to increase the water intake.
5. Lemon Honey Water & Diabetic Patients:
Though honey is good for health compared to regular white sugar, it is still a sweetener and should be avoided by diabetic patients. Consuming lemon honey water in empty stomach is especially bad for diabetics as it spikes blood sugar levels drastically.
