DIY Recipe:How to Make Easy Natural Homemade Body Lotion for Dry Skin

If you are like me, who enjoys making your own things, then you will greatly enjoy making this easy homemade lotion recipe at home. When I first made this homemade lotion recipe at home, I was so pleased with the result. The lotion was non greasy, moisturized my skin nicely, with a nice smell of fresh roses. This homemade body lotion is very good for dry skin, especially during the winter months. All the ingredients for this homemade lotion is found at home, except glycerine. Glycerine can be bought at any medical store easily. Please try to make your own rose water at home, as it gives the best results. Store bought rose water contains just artificial essence and water. You can even make the rose water ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Once you get hold of all the ingredients, you can make this homemade lotion in a matter of minutes. When I was making the lotion, the rose smell that was wafting from the lotion was incredible. This lotion keeps well for few weeks, if refrigerated.

METHOD:

1. Get all your things ready. Measure out the glycerine and rose water in measuring cups.

2. Heat rose water in a pan, in low flame. Don’t let it boil.

3. Once the rose water is hot, add the lemon juice. Let it dissolve.

4. Once the lemon juice is dissolved, switch off. Add the glycerine. Stir well.

5. Finally, add the rose essential oil and stir every thing together well. Cool and store in a bottle.

NOTES:

  • You can strain the lotion, before storing it in a bottle.
  • The color of this homemade lotion depends on the color of the rose water.
  • Apply this lotion all over your body immediately after bath, for best results.
  • Don’t let the rose water boil.

My mother used to keep a mix of glycerine, rose water, lemon juice in a bottle and apply it on our face, arms and legs after a bath. It was quite refreshing. After reading your post, I am reminded of that. I am tempted to try it. The sweet rose smell and hydrated feeling was awesome…

Hi Ramya. I love looking up your site as I am motivated to use more natural/homemade stuff (which are more skin/health and nature friendly) rather than store bought cosmetics.I had a question regarding the essential oil used in this site for lotion preparation. Can we use any essential oil (like say Lavender) instead of rose (I understand that you have natural bonding to rose and rose products)?

Yes, I am partial to the smell of roses :). Also since we add rose water in the lotion, rose essential oil goes well with it but you can also try other essential oils in the recipe….

Hi Ramya,I am a big fan of your blog. I myself vouch for homemade natural remedies when it comes to skin and Hair care, and also being a DIY obsessed person your blog turns out to be app for me. I appreciate all the hard work you put in to give us wonderful recipes. I did try making this lotion, it did turn out well. However it has a lil sweet taste due to which it is a lil sticky. I have used the normal glycerin bought from the medical store. Would you please be able to point out where I went wrong and how could this be rectified. Also I have been trying from a very long time to try out the vitamin c serum. But due to the unavailability of the product in my area I am unable to try it out. It well be of great help if you could suggest an alternative for the same. Thanks in advanceHazel

Glycerin tends to make this lotion sticky. Since it is making your skin sticky, I would suggest altering the recipe, decrease the glycerin content in the recipe drastically and also try to use vegetable glycerin. Since you have already made the lotion add 1/2 cup more rose water to it or adjust till you feel it suits your skin….

In my local town, I get only "Aroma Magic" brand essential oils and I have been using only that and they are ok. But now lately I have started buying essential oils online and brands like "Now" are really good. They are very expensive but worth the price…
