Licorice tea/ Athimadhuram tea/ Mulethi tea has wonderful health benefits. 1. For Digestion- Licorice root has been used for centuries to treat various ailments that involves digestive tract, as it helps to protect the stomach lining. 2. For Cough- Licorice tea is amazing home remedy for cough and since it is sweet by itself, it is easier to make the children drink it. However this herb should not be taken over the limit. Licorice tea is very sweet by itself, but we always add a bit of palm candy to it. To make this licorice decoction, first pound the licorice root and break it into pieces. Boil water with palm candy. Once the water comes to a roaring boil and the palm candy has dissolved, add the licorice root. Let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes before straining it. Your licorice tea made the Indian way, with palm candy is ready!
1. Take licorice root (the one you see in the main picture) in a mortar and pestle and pound it coarsely.
2. This is palm candy and it is very rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
3. Boil water in pan along with palm candy.
4. Once the palm candy has dissolved and the water has come to a rolling boil, add the pounded licorice root and let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes. The longer you boil, the sweeter the tea will be.
5. Strain and your sweet licorice tea is ready!
We always use palm candy for licorice root tea recipe, but if you don't have it then just skip it and make the tea.
If you have health problems, don't use licorice tea without your doctors approval.
Don't drink this tea continuously for more than a week.
This treatment gives good relief for throat infections and cough.
