3 Top Benefits of Pergularia Daemia | Uthamani Plant | Veliparuthi for Health

Veliparuthi plant also commonly called uthamani in Tamil is called Utran in Hindi and Trellis-Vine in English. It's a creeper and it's botanical name is pergularia Daemia. You can easily find this plant in most of the villages in India and it's found in most of the Asian countries and in Africa. I have long been thinking of writing about veliparuthi but somehow or the other I didn't but when a reader of this blog asked me about veliparuthi, I thought I will do it today. This plant is well known in our village side and we use it extensively in home remedies. The best way to identify the plant is with it's unique fruits and heart shaped leaves. Usually it is found along the road side and that is why it is commonly called veli paruthi.  It smells bad when bruised and stems produce a milky latex when broken. Each and every part of this plant is used as a medicine including the latex. It reduces blood sugar levels, treats jaundice and minor wounds and the best part is extensive studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of most of it's medicinal uses. Since it is easily found along road sides, using the extract for treating insect bites are very common in our place. You can also grow this plant in your garden and it needs very little maintenance. The leaves also can be collected, dried and stored for future use. An  important study on veliparuthi which really excited me was about it's amazing use in treating poly cystic ovarian syndrome which affects many women now. The study showed remarkable results when 1ml of fresh veliparuthi leaf juice was administered for 6 consequential days and the researchers concluded that veliparuthi extract was highly effective in treating pcos. One study done on rats proved conclusively that veliparuthi infusion protects the liver of toxicity. It was also proven of it's effectiveness in treating toothache and also in a study done on rats showed significant antihyperglycemic activity (diabetic control). Velparuthi also showed significant antibacterial and anti fungal properties and along with it antioxidant properties too, making it very valuable for treating stress related diseases. Pregnant women and women who are planning for pregnancy should not consume this herb as it has anti fertility properties.

  1. Hi ramya, this is a wonderful blog! I have pcos n i suffer from excessive hair growth. I have hair on face too, sideburns, cheeks, neck. I know that pcos would cause irregular.periods, obesity n excessive hair growth. Fortunately, i have always had regular periods n i am not obese. But the excessive hair growth o face is a huge confidence damper! I would be very grateful if you could help further. Will the periods get effectex by taking the uthamani leaves? Will the hair growth stop? I used to massage with seseme oil n besan, turmeric paste regularly for almost 2 years but it was of no use. Looking forward for your answer. Thank you!

    1. Thanks a lot and very sorry for the late reply. I would suggest trying the fresh uthamani extract everyday for a week as it is considered the best remedy for pcos. Since the facial hair growth is a side effect of pcos, it is best to treat the problem than the side effect and as far as I know it does not affect periods in anyway.....

    1. I am very sorry for the late reply. Natural methods of hair removal does work but it takes time and it has to applied daily to see results. I would suggest using rose petal bath powder from the blog daily for her as she is still very young. It will not only remove unwanted hair but it will keep her skin blemish free if used regularly. Here is the link for making it at home: wildturmeric

    1. Gracy, Pergularia daemia is used for treating all uterus problems. Though pergularia has low levels of toxicity, I would still suggest consulting any ayurvedic physician about the correct dosage and the duration it should be taken for treating specific problems...
